Brno: a Christmas city in the heart of Europe

Autumn has shown that it is here, and so we can slowly turn our thoughts to the most beautiful holiday of the year—Christmas. Christmas is particularly special for the city of Brno. Last year, the city ranked alongside the European cities with the most beautiful Christmas markets and was even voted European Christmas City for 2024 by the European Commission.

“This year, visitors can look forward to plenty of interesting things. The spirit of Christmas in Brno is marked by traditional values, simple customs and charity. However, the Christmas market also brings a great deal of cultured entertainment for everyone, especially for families with children. Cooperation with the Christmas market vendors was key. They’ve formed a close-knit community that has one goal in mind—to create a happy and content Christmas for all,” said Ludmila Oulehlová (ANO), First Deputy Mayor of the Brno-střed municipal district, who is responsible for business development. This year’s Christmas in Brno will begin at the Vegetable Market and Moravian Square on 15 November, as in other major European cities. A week later, the markets at Freedom Square and Dominican Square will also open. The city centre will be filled with Christmas spirit until 31 December.

More than 240 stalls will be open for visitors at the squares. They can also look forward to traditional attractions. A thirty-three-metre high Ferris wheel and a large ice-skating rink will be installed in the park at Moravian Square. Children will once again appreciate the giant straw bale stack located near the statue of Jobst or meeting the Brno dragon all lit up. The organisers also promise several novelties. Families with children will surely be delighted by the 600-square-metre children’s village, which will come to life at the Vegetable Market. The winter atmosphere will be underlined by the light trail on Bašty Street near the main railway station. All this will be complemented by a rich cultural programme. More than 200 artists will perform at Christmas Brno this year. Leoš Mareš will be among the first to appear at the Vegetable Market on 15 November, followed by Monika Bagárová, Jasná páka accompanied by David Koller, Lenny, Laura a její tygři, Lipo, Rozálie, Folk Team, Eliška Bučková and many others.

“Naturally, most of the listed attractions and the cultural programme are free for the public. Christmas Brno is a very successful business iniciative. The whole project is financed by fees paid by the vendors who rent the Christmas stalls. This income has tripled in the last two years. The municipality is thus able to invest increasingly more money in the Christmas markets. That’s what makes Brno Christmas so beautiful,” said Deputy Mayor Oulehlová. The main organiser of Christmas Brno is the Brno-střed district, a good example of a well-managed city. The organisers consult with vendors about all planned expenditures; they are the ones who know best regarding what the Christmas markets need and what will make visitors most happy. This close cooperation has resulted in Europe’s finest Christmas market. More information can be found on the website vanocebrno.cz and on the official Facebook and Instagram pages.
